Mechatronics Department

The Mechatronics Engineering Major Degree at Ain Shams University has opened its doors to undergraduate students in Fall-2004 and has since evolved into today's well-known Mechatronics Program. Mechatronics integrates multidisciplinary fields of Mechanical, Electronics, Computer Science and Control Engineering.

The aim of this study program is to graduate Mechatronics engineers that are capable of penetrating Egyptian, regional, and international markets with their knowledge, skills, professionalism and ethics. The study in the Mechatronics Program also aims at providing the students with a widespread knowledge and hands-on experience in Robotics, Programming, Control Systems plus many other related subjects.
The department had a funded Tempus Project "Mekatron" in the duration of Sep. 2005 - Sep.2008. Prof.Magdy AbdelHameed was the coordinator of the project. Throughout this project, the Mechatronics Lab has been established to provide different training and innovative skills for undergraduate and postgraduate students. The second Lab owned by the department is the Automatic Control Lab. Today, the department's research program focuses on advanced fields in Mechatronics such as Bio-Mechatronics, Autotronics, Industrial Automation, Robotics, , and Nano-Mechatronics (N/MEMS).

Vision

Providing excellent Mechatronics engineering education based on applying advanced technologies to serve the Industry.

Mission

Providing high quality up-to-date education in the field of Mechatronics, and preparing distinguished graduates who are capable of competing in the local, regional and international markets, absorb the fast-paced advances and new developments in the field of Mechatronics, conduct valuable research and fulfill the era’s requirements with respect to the ethical and professional standards in theory and practice. This is to enable our graduates to deal with the realistic problems in this field, and provide specialized services to the community that is concerned with developing the built environment. This occurs within the framework of a supportive environment for the sustainable development of the knowledge and the various skills of the students as well as the faculty members, and in cooperation with the relevant industrial and research entities locally and internationally.
PROGRAM AIMS
The main aims of the Mechatronics Engineering program at the Faculty of Engineering in Ain Shams University are to equip the student with the proper scientific knowledge and develop his/her skills to:

1. Take a leading role in the professional practice on the scale of national, regional and international Mechatronics engineering field, and to communicate and work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.

2. Adopt a holistic problem-solving approach for complex, ambiguous, and open-ended challenges and scenarios in the Mechatronics engineering field.

3. Exhibit a potential for higher education and research, as well as the ability to promote and sustain entrepreneurial ventures.

4.  Demonstrate the capacity of critical thinking, creativity, lifelong learning, self-development.

5.  Compelled to challenge critical global issues through holding responsibility of the built environment, responding to societal needs, and conserving natural resources, and display professional and ethical responsibilities, and contextual understanding.

PA 6. Identify, formulate, and solve fundamental engineering problems.

Student Profile

This program is designed to:
  1. Enrich the student’s basic theoretical and practical knowledge of mechatronic system components, and design methodologies of mechatronic systems.
  2. Develop the student’s ability to use the state-of-the-art technologies to find affordable, reliable and innovative solutions to improve our daily quality of life.
  3. Develop the student’s ability to work within a multidisciplinary team during the analysis, design and implementation phases of mechatronics engineering projects, while applying ethical standards and environmental considerations.
  4. Develop the student’s ability to conduct Research and Development (R&D) activities to create innovative mechatronic solutions having direct impact on industrial, commercial, and social scales.
  5. Enrich the student’s management and business skills to be able to effectively contribute and compete in local, regional and international markets
  6. Setup and operate automated and/or autonomous production lines which are based on embedded systems, PLCs and SCADA systems.
  7. Carry out the modern troubleshooting and maintenance techniques relevant to what we call it machine health monitoring (MHM) for both hardware and software or combined mechatronic products.
  8. Design, develop and maintain safety critical mechatronic systems.
